Helldivers 2 is stepping into the grim darkness of the far future with an appropriate collab: the Warhammer 40,000 Castellan’s Creed Legendary Warbond is coming to the game on Aug. 12. “Roll the dice to break the traitorous enemies of Super Earth in this historic crossover Legendary Warbond,” the YouTube description for the announcement trailer reads.
The trailer showcases armor and weapons inspired by the Imperium’s Cadian Kasrkin. For guns, there’s the Hot-shot Marksman Rifle, which comes with a scope and appears to be for medium- to long-range fights. The classic Bolt Pistol is a secondary weapon. There’s a new throwable with the Meltamine, which can be used as a booby trap. As for stratagems, players can call in the Meltagun, which fires a supercharged beam that can cut through tanks.
As for defensive equipment, this warbond includes the TG-8 Sharpshooter medium armor. It has the passive True Grit, which applies +20 weapon handling and a +30% reload speed for support weapons. The TG-122 Demo-Trooper set is heavy armor with the same passive. As for cosmetics, there are new patterns for the FRV buggy, exo suit, shuttle, and helipod. There will also be new player banners, capes, and a player title. Notably, this Warhammer 40K crossover demonstrated quite a bit of restraint in not including the iconic Space Marines. This choice was likely made because it wouldn’t make a lot of sense if the “Emperor’s finest” were biting it at the rate of Super Earth’s hapless foot soldiers.
While Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead hasn’t directly confirmed the price, the previous Halo ODST Legendary Warbond cost 1500 Super Credits. For context, it is $1.99 for 150 Super Credits, $4.99 for 375, $9.99 for 1000, and $19.99 for 2100 (because in-game currency is rarely straightforward).
Helldivers 2 has enjoyed fairly steady popularity since its explosive debut almost two and a half years ago, when it reached 458,709 concurrent players on Steam alone. While it no longer hits those highs, the game still maintains a solid player count that spikes whenever a major update is released.
However, as a Sony-published game, Helldivers 2 has also been swept up in the backlash against the company’s decision to end support of physical games on its consoles. “The emperor of mankind loves his games with physical discs,” one comment on the YouTube video reads. Hopefully, the backlash proves as enduring as the Imperium.
