Trading screens on Dalal Street will remain blank today, Thursday, May 1, 2025, as both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) are shut for Maharashtra Day.
Why is there no trading today?
May 1 marks Maharashtra Day, a state holiday that commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. Since both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) are headquartered in Mumbai, they observe this local holiday every year.
So, BSE and NSE are closed today and there is no equity trading and derivatives action.
What segments are affected?
According to the official BSE holiday list for 2025, here’s what’s closed on May 1:
- Equity Segment
- Equity Derivatives
- Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB)
- Currency Derivatives
- NDS-RST (Negotiated Dealing System – Reserve Bank of India)
- Tri-Party Rep
What about commodity markets?
The Commodity Derivatives and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) segments have a partial holiday:
- Closed during morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM)
- Open for the evening session (from 5:00 PM onwards)
So if you are trading in commodities or gold receipts, you will need to wait until evening to resume transactions.
With Thursday off, this becomes yet another short trading week for market participants.
