If you’re on the hunt for a new survival game to play with friends, you’ll want to check out Railgods of Hysterra. Your home base is a moving train. The world is a Lovecraftian nightmare. Contrary to a lot of the genre staples, where realism reigns supreme, Railgods is driven by a vivid, eccentric central concept. So if you’re tired of Palworld, Rust, Sons of the Forest, or V Rising, the game’s Steam Early Access launch is definitely one to check out.
The world has been forever changed by the Great Old Ones – Lovecraft-inspired cosmic beings who want nothing more than to watch you suffer. They’ve covered the land in perpetual darkness and slimy, Eldritch beasts, but you do have sanctuary: the titular Railgods of Hysterra.
These sentient trains are demonic fortresses on wheels, which you can turn into your new home. They do require regular sacrifices, sure, but that’s a small price to pay for a mobile safe haven when the apocalypse has come knocking. Like the best survival games, you’ll also have to venture into the wilderness. You’ll need to explore, craft tools, maintain weapons, and upgrade the train if you want to succeed. You can squad up with four other players, too.
Compared to the demo versions of Railgods, in the early-access edition you have a main quest that’s tied to the building, crafting, and combat systems. Ranged fights have also been improved, while inventory filters and optimization have been added to make navigating the menus even easier.
There are also two major content expansions (and more) coming in the next few months. You can expect new zones, enemies, bosses, railgod carriages, system updates, and even a fishing mechanic somewhere down the line as well.
