Macy’s is closing 66 stores across the country this year as it tries to turn the company around after years of faltering sales.
REDMOND, Wash. — Macy’s is closing 66 stores across the country this year as it tries to turn the company around after years of faltering sales.
The locations are expected to close sometime in the first half of the year. Macy’s announced a plan last year to close roughly 150 “unproductive stores” as it tries to “return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.”
The closures will happen over a three year period, with the first 66 closing some time in 2025. Many are expected to close in quarter one of the year.
Three of the 66 stores will be in western Washington. Those locations include the South Hill Mall store in Puyallup, the Furniture and Mattress Gallery store in Redmond and finally the Kitsap Mall store in Silverdale.
It is not yet known how many employees will be impacted by the closures.
Four Macy’s stores in western Washington have shuttered in the last decade, which resulted in the layoff of more than 100 employees at each location.
Clearance sales at impacted Macy’s stores will start this month and run for roughly eight to 12 weeks, according to Macy’s. Macy’s Furniture Galleries will have clearance sales start in February and run into March. Coupons are only accepted through Jan. 12 at these closing locations.
It’s not entirely clear how these “go-forward” stores differ from Macy’s stores many may be familiar with.
The 66 locations closing this year will be in nearly two dozen other states including: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
