The thrill of extraction shooters comes from unpredictability. You can spawn in and net a hefty payday, or get wasted on the spot by rogue players. That can feel a tad unfair, especially if you’re sent back to the lobby before you’ve barely begun. Modern Warfare 4 DMZ aims to change that, but Infinity Ward’s explanation of its revival mechanics suggests getting back on your feet won’t always mean you’re safe.
In a new Reddit AMA for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward responds to whether a single self-revive will hold operators back. You can typically buy a self-revive from buy stations in Warzone and the older version of DMZ, or find it as ground loot. This time, Infinity Ward expresses that every player has a built-in second chance, but it comes with a significant drawback.
“In DMZ, every operator deploys with the Tourniquet ability,” the developer explains. “If an operator goes down, they can use the Tourniquet mechanic to get back up, but this leaves them in a wounded state.” That wound puts you at a disadvantage in subsequent firefights, capping your health at 100 HP instead of 150.
To fully recover, you must use a medkit. This restores access to the Tourniquet ability, giving you another chance to get back up if you’re downed again. Until then, players can use other medical supplies to temporarily restore their health without treating the underlying wound. Infinity Ward adds that “if the operator goes down again, they cannot use a Tourniquet to get back up” while relying on this temporary health. Choosing when to heal could prove just as important as knowing when to engage another squad.
Another option for players who want extra insurance against being downed. “Players can also loot and print self-revives,” Infinity Ward confirms. However, the response doesn’t specify a maximum number of self-revives players can carry or use, though. We’ll find out soon, as the upcoming FPS game enters early access.
Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode will be available in Early Access from Tuesday, October 20, 2026, for players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase the game. After the recent Arc Raiders update, I’m keen to see whether DMZ’s revived state can lure me away from the Rust Belt. Either way, I’ll see you in Hajin.
