Destiny 2 expansions are always pivotal and exciting moments for the looter shooter, introducing new mechanics, features, and narrative threads. Last year’s The Final Shape was one of the best in the game’s history, but its upcoming expansion – codenamed Apollo – could be an even bigger landmark moment. Now, Bungie has confirmed its official name, The Edge of Fate, and set a date for a full reveal of the expansion and what it’ll bring to Destiny 2 later this year.

Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate is a big deal for a number of reasons, but the two most important ones are that it will kick off a brand new narrative saga for the first time in years following the conclusion of the Light and Dark storyline, and it’ll transform how Bungie delivers content to the live service FPS game. It’s already experimented with its Episodes and Acts system during the current Final Shape era, but things are changing again for The Edge of Fate. Expansions will still be paid DLCs, but will be shorter in length, covering roughly six-month periods instead of a year. There will only be two seasonal updates over the course of an expansion, but seasons will be free.

Bungie has also teased that with The Edge of Fate and the expansion following it, it’ll be getting experimental with how it delivers the story beats of its new saga. The developer previously said it was looking at “non-linear” ways to convey the narrative, letting players unravel things in their own time and in their own way. It’s also said to be looking into providing more experiences inspired by roguelikes and Metroidvanias.

That’s the overarching goal of this shakeup to expansions and seasons, but some more tangible details about The Edge of Fate and everything coming to Destiny 2 in the next 12 months or so will be unveiled very soon.

Bungie will fully reveal Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate in a livestreamed showcase on Tuesday May 6 at 9am PDT / 12pm EDT / 5pm BST / 6pm CEST. There’s currently no confirmed release date for the expansion yet, but it’s expected to arrive in Summer 2025.
