NMC Seeks Feedback on Draft Plan to Rank and Accredit Medical Colleges
According to an official statement, MARB, under Section 26(1)(d) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, plans to carry out the accreditation and rating of all NMC-regulated medical colleges through an independent third-party agency.
The ranking will be based on a set of criteria with specific weightage given to each category. A total of 78 parameters have been identified—26 qualitative and 52 quantitative—divided across the following areas:
Criteria | Total Parameters | Weightage |
Curriculum Implementation and Capacity Building | 6 | 100 |
Clinical Exposure and Facilities | 11 | 100 |
Teaching-Learning Environment | 11 | 130 |
Student Admission, Competence & Progress | 6 | 140 |
Human Resources & Teaching Process | 11 | 160 |
Assessment Policy | 4 | 60 |
Research Output & Impact | 8 | 100 |
Financial Resources | 10 | 100 |
Community Outreach | 2 | 40 |
Quality Assurance | 5 | 30 |
Stakeholder Feedback | 4 | 40 |
Total | 78 | 1000 |
In 2023, MARB collaborated with the Quality Council of India (QCI) to assess medical colleges. Following this, the NMC introduced the “Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023.” Under these regulations, MARB can appoint one or more independent third-party agencies to conduct assessments and ratings.

The NMC has encouraged the medical fraternity to review the draft framework and share their suggestions online to help finalize the process.
