Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma entered his name in the history books on Thursday, February 20, by becoming the second-fastest batter in the world after Virat Kohli to score 11,000 runs in ODIs. The 37-year-old right-handed batter crossed the 11000-run mark in the 261st inning of his 269th ODI match for Men in Blue, which is currently underway at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai against Bangladesh.

Kohli, who has 13,963 runs to his name in 297 ODIs played so far, crossed the 11,000 run mark in ODIs during his 222nd innings of the 230th match played against Pakistan in Manchester on June 16, 2019.

Fastest to 11,000 runs in ODIs

  • Virat Kohli (India) – 222
  • Rohit Sharma (India) – 261
  • Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 276
  • Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 286
  • Sourav Ganguly (India) – 288
  • Jacques Kallis (South Africa) – 293

Rohit is the fourth Indian and overall 10th batter in the world to score 11,000 runs in ODIs.

Rohit, who has three centuries to his name in four matches played so far against Bangladesh in ICC ODI events, would like to convert his good start into a big score on Thursday as well and help India chase down the target of 229 runs without much fuss.

If India manage to beat Bangladesh in Dubai, then Rohit will become the fourth Indian captain after Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli to win 100 international matches. India has won 99 out of 137 matches played so far across formats under Rohit’s leadership.

Most wins as India captain

  • MS Dhoni – 179
  • Virat Kohli – 137
  • Mohammad Azharuddin – 104
  • Rohit Sharma – 99
  • Sourav Ganguly – 97

Kohli, who will come out to bat at No. 3, will also have a chance to create history. The former India captain will become the fastest batter in the world to score 14,000 runs in ODI cricket if he scores at least 37 runs in Dubai on Thursday.

The former India captain has 13,963 runs to his name in 297 ODI matches played so far. He is 37 runs from breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of being the fastest to 14,000 runs in ODIs. Tendulkar, who finished his career with 18,426 runs in 463 ODI matches, scored his 14,000 ODI run in the 350th inning of 378th ODI match played against Pakistan in Peshawar on February 6, 2006.
