The woman accused of driving a U-Haul truck towards federal officers at Coast Guard Island in Alameda has been formally charged, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Brendan Munro Thompson, 26, is charged with assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon. Thompson allegedly accelerated a U-Haul truck toward several U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel at the entrance to the base in Alameda on Oct. 23, the complaint says.
Thompson appeared in federal court Tuesday morning to face the charges.
On the night in question, USCG personnel were guarding the bridge connecting Coast Guard Island with Oakland when Thompson drove a 10-foot-long U-Haul truck onto the eastern part of the bridge.
Thompson then backed the truck onto the bridge, and as the truck accelerated in reverse towards the USCG personnel, the guards shouted orders to the driver to stop, the complaint says.
When Thompson did not stop, USCG personnel fired their weapons at the U-Haul truck, according to documents. Thompson then drove away and later received medical treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot injury, officials said.
“As alleged, Thompson drove a U-Haul truck directly into a line of Coast Guard personnel who were protecting the Coast Guard base, as they bravely do day in and day out. Let this be clear: there is zero tolerance for assault on federal officers or property, and those who do so will face federal criminal charges,” U.S. Attorney Craig H. Missakian said in a news release.
Thompson’s next scheduled appearance in court is for a status on detention and preliminary hearing on Nov. 10, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
