There are times in Coen’s journey when he’ll have to do bad things to achieve something good – getting his family back means going up against some fearsome foes, and the path to redemption, in this case, is stained with blood. You don’t have to become your enemy to beat your enemy, though, and there are times in The Blood of Dawnwalker when you can show mercy.

After fighting some of The Blood of Dawnwalker bosses, you’re given the option to ‘invite them in,’ but what does this mean? Showing mercy to your enemies is perhaps the biggest way to show that you aren’t like them. They probably don’t deserve it, but you can be the bigger man if you want. Strap on your Mandrake Ward perk and make sure you’ve unlocked the Font of Life – you’ve got a decision to make.

Dawnwalker Ambrus invite: a man wearing a red doublet thinking about inviting another person in.

What happens when you invite Ambrus in?

After beating Ambrus, you’re given a dialogue option to invite him in. It isn’t quite clear what this is, and you don’t have time for a sneaky quicksave beforehand; what you decide next can have implications for the rest of your playthrough.

If you choose to show Ambrus mercy and invite him in, he becomes a part of you. His essence merges with Coen, and you’ll be able to hear him inside your head for the rest of the game. Ambrus will offer advice, comment on your actions, and talk about other Vrakhiri. It can give context to a lot of what you do going forward, but it’s up to you whether you want another voice in the mix.

Can you invite anyone else in?

You can invite each of the Vrakhiri bosses in. Any of the bosses you invite in will make an appearance in the final battle against Brencis, adding a twist to what is a difficult fight. They will also lend their voices to the growing chorus inside Coen’s head, offering unique insight into various parts of the map.

Now that you know the consequences of inviting the Vrakhiri in, you can decide if these monsters deserve mercy, or whether you should damn them to vampire superhell. If you want a different kind of relationship, check out our romance guide here for who you can get close to during your journey.
