Amidst widespread speculation about the World Bank’s role after India said it would keep in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty, a pact that the World Bank helped negotiate between the two feuding nations, the institution’s President Ajay Banga brought in the much-needed clarity. Bill Gates sets new 20-year deadline to give away his fortune as foundation turns 25
As the Gates Foundation marks its 25th anniversary, Bill Gates is setting an audacious new target: to give away nearly all his remaining wealth within the next 20 years. In doing so, he’s committing to double the foundation’s spending over the next two decades — pouring in $200 billion, up from the $100 billion spent since its inception.
This pivot comes at a time of increasing global uncertainty. Gates says the decision to accelerate giving wasn’t triggered by current geopolitical or economic turmoil, but the timing means the funds will arrive when many public health and development systems are under pressure. “In the short run, I am very disappointed that aid generosity is down,” he told CNBC-TV18, pointing to slashed aid budgets, mounting debt and instability across many low-income countries.
