A video of an Indian woman tearfully pleading with US police officers after being accused of shoplifting from a Target store has sparked debate online.

The clip, which surfaced on social media, has garnered millions of views, although details about where and when the incident took place remain unclear.

In the clip, the woman apologised repeatedly while insisting she had forgotten to pay for the items found with her.

She folded her hands and begged the officers, saying, “No sir, sorry. Please.” Despite being instructed multiple times to turn around, she continued crying and did not follow their directions.

The officers informed her that she would be taken to the station and released after completing formalities, which they said would take a few hours. She asked to call her husband, but the police denied the request.

It is still unknown what she allegedly took from the store.

Several users criticised her conduct, calling it “shameful” and arguing that such incidents affect the reputation of Indians abroad. Others expressed sympathy but noted that “rules apply to everyone.”

The original version of the clip reportedly appeared on Facebook a few days ago before being removed. However, multiple re-uploads remain online.

IndiaToday.in could not independently verify the claims circulating with the video.

Another similar case surfaced earlier this year, when two separate clips of Indian women accused of shoplifting at Target stores in the US went viral in July and September. Both videos showed women pleading with officers in police custody.
