Even the Doomslayer might need to look something up from time to time. Ammo, weapons, new abominations to kill in glorious fashion, there’s a lot to keep track of if you’re taking on the armies of hell. Now, when he does, he can keep up on his demon slaying, because Doom has been ported right into the Google search bar.

Yes, the most iconic FPS game of them all, the mighty Doom, is playable from your Google homepage. This isn’t some crafty doodle either – though this should provide some inspiration on that front – instead, it’s the work of a single programmer, who decided the search engine needed more bullets and killer riffs.

Pedro Webber put the project together, and as you can see in his video below, the old PC game looks just as gnarly in text as it does in full color. There’s controller support for maximum rip and tear, should that your preferred method of slaying. The soundtrack is still there to provide inspiration for mowing down imps and cacodemons as well.

Essentially, Webber imports a version of Doom written in programming language Python into the search bar, that then expands into a functioning copy of the action game. He needs to zoom out to get the playable area anywhere near useable, but then it looks just fine. The frame rate’s a bit off and it’s a bit tricky to discern what’s going on, but those are niggling complaints.

Webber’s getting a reputation for these experiments, putting RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 into Notepad, Elden Ring into ASCII art, and Doom into Visual Studio. I have to say, this is his coolest trick so far, but the ASCII FromSoftware comes in close second.

Lawnmowers, RGB fans, the list of bizarre ports just keeps growing. Aside from obsessing over ports of the original, we have a guide to Doom: The Dark Ages for all the franchise’s current happenings. Consult our lists of the best new PC games and upcoming games for other releases Webber might tackle next.
