Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King—the hit prequel to The Lion King—is coming soon to digital streaming.
Rated PG, Mufasa: The Lion King opened in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024. Directed by Oscar-winning Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins, the logline for Mufasa: The Lion King reads, “Mufasa, a cub lost and alone, meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny.”
Aaron Pierre voices the adult version of Mufasa in the film while Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices Taka, who is destined to become Skar. The film marks the first time that late lengendary actor James Earl Jones does not voice the iconic role of Mufasa. The character is also voiced in his youth Mufasa: The Lion King by Braelyn Rankins.
The film also stars the voices of Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, John Kani, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and Donald Glover.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced on YouTube video on Monday that Mufasa: The Lion King will arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
When Mufasa: The Lion King arrives on PVOD, the film will be available on a variety of digital platforms, including Prime Video, AppleTV and Fandango at Home. Prime Video currently has Mufasa: The Lion King available for pre-order for digital purchase for $29.99. Since digital rentals are $5 less than digital purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent Mufasa: The Lion King for $24.99 for a 48-hour period.
How Was ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Received By Audiences And Critics?
According to The Numbers, Mufasa: The Lion King has earned $229.5 million domestically and $423.5 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $653 million against a $200 million budget before prints and advertising costs.
Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave Mufasa: The Lion King a 58% “rotten” rating based on 209 reviews.
RT’s Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Barry Jenkins’ deft hand and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music go some way towards squaring the Circle of Life in Mufasa, but this fitfully soulful story is ill-served by its impersonal, photorealistic animation style.”
Audiences, however, felt much differently about Mufasa: The Lion King, giving the film an 89% “fresh” rating on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 5,000-plus verified user ratings.
