The Elder Scroll 6: Sentinel’s Name Quietly Teases Juicy ‘Skyrim’ Sequel

Eight years after the original announcement, we’ve finally learned the name of Bethesda’s next RPG: The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. Since the developer didn’t show any gameplay footage, all fans can really do is muse on the meaning of the title. As disappointing as that is, Elder Scrolls loreheads do have plenty to chew on.

The subtitle has been an open secret for a while now — fans guessed it correctly years ahead of the reveal, and Xbox was teasing an eight-letter subtitle recently as well. The first and primary reason for this title should be obvious: it sounds cool. That’s not the only reason, of course. Accompanying the title in the trailer was a short quote from Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell:

The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.

The Hammerfell setting has been rumored for a while now as well, but the quote cements it in stone. Hammerfell is a region to the north of Skyrim, and it is the home of the Redguard race. Redguards are known for their strength, combat prowess, and resilience in harsh climates. Accordingly, Hammerfell and its deserts, jungles, and mountain ranges were once known as the Deathlands.

Hammerfell will be immediately recognizable to anyone who has played The Elder Scrolls Online. And the most consequential region in Hammerfell is arguably — drumroll please — Sentinel. Sentinel’s proximity to the sea makes it a critical trading post for Tamriel at large. Five major areas of Sentinel are already explorable in ESO: the docks, a Redguard gym, a grand royal palace, a massive open-air marketplace, and a sewer system.

How does TES6 connect to Skyrim?

Moth priests are a part of a cult that devotes itself to reading the actual Elder Scrolls. These priests use the scrolls to foretell the future in an effort to help monarchs like the Emperor or, in this case, the regional queen. The timing of the quote — 4E 206 — places Sentinel five years after the events of Skyrim.

It’s worth knowing that Hammerfell has spent centuries embroiled between its northern and southern regions, but the area was unified by the time Skyrim takes place. That unification was primarily meant to help save Sentinel from an opportunistic Elven incursion that tried to take advantage of the ongoing larger turmoil.

A five-year time jump would likely further Hammerfell’s era as a sovereign state — but that doesn’t necessarily signal stability. Hammerfell’s independence separates it from the larger empire that could provide it support during a time of need. That’s important, because the elves probably aren’t done with Hammerfell, either.

There are two primary events in Skyrim that are of note here. One involves the Dark Brotherhood quest where the player assassinates Emperor Titus Mede II. A death like that opens the door for the elves to launch an assault while the wider empire tries to pick up the pieces after the assassination.

The other quest, which involves a Redguard noble person named Saadia, is a perfect encapsulation of what players can expect in The Elder Scrolls 6. In it, Saadia claims she is being hunted by elves for speaking out. After the player investigates further, it turns out that Saadia actually betrayed the Redguard to help the elves. This sets a precedent that the elves have already infiltrated the highest echelons of power in Sentinel — and will probably find more ways to sow discord in the new game.

The quote is ambiguous but could be read as an attempt by Hammerfell’s High Queen to figure out how to proceed in what is undoubtedly a messy situation.

Hopefully, Bethesda won’t keep fans guessing for too long. It’s been nearly a decade since the game was originally announced, and the RPG has apparently been playable since 2025. Fans are ready for something more than just a title screen.
