Kolhapur: A sessions court in Kolhapur on Friday extended Nagpur-based journalist Prashant Koratkar‘s police custody remand till March 30 in the case of threatening historian Indrajit Sawant over a phone call and making remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, tending to create a divide between communities.
Koratkar’s three-day custodial remand came to an end on Friday, prompting his heavily guarded appearance at the court at 8am. The heightened security measures were deemed necessary after attack threats by ‘Shiv-premis’ on Tuesday. The heightened security measures helped as a lawyer attempted to attack Koratkar. But, the on-duty guards nabbed the lawyer immediately, averting further escalation.
The state prosecution sought a five-day extension of Koratkar’s remand on the grounds that the police needed to investigate and establish the people who helped him while he was absconding for a month. During interrogation, Koratkar revealed sketchy details about how he managed to evade his arrest for a month, the prosecutor said.
The prosecution apprised the court that forensic experts collected Koratkar’s voice samples. During the investigation, the police got to know about the places Koratkar visited, the people he met and where he stayed to evade the arrest. The police claimed that since he was not using internet banking or any form of virtual payment, he must have got cash from someone. The police placed on the record that Koratkar travelled to Chandrapur, Indore and Karimnagar. The police also told the court that he came in contact with five individuals, who have been served notices via WhatsApp.
Koratkar’s lawyer, Saurabh Ghag, opposed the prosecution’s demand and submitted that the three-day custody was sufficient.
Koratkar was arrested from Mancherial railway station in Telangana. The police said he was planning to travel to Chennai to evade the arrest.
