There’s something about H.P. Lovecraft’s mysterious science fiction universes that just draws you in. The dark and the bizarre are just so alluring, and that’s what made The Sinking City so special back in 2021. Its sequel, however, while announced, has been quiet for some time – in fact its inaugural trailer debuted a year ago today. After 365 days of silence, Frogwares is back, and we’ve finally seen some gameplay from The Sinking City 2.

We’re back in 1920s America, a post-WWI world that’s teetering on the brink of collapse and, in The Sinking City 2, cosmic Armageddon. Much like other survival horror games, the aim is simple: manage your resources and get out alive – what’s the worst that could possibly happen?

Well, unfortunately the city of Arkham is in a state of disrepair. Eldritch monsters roam the streets, avidly hunting down intrepid explorers and lost souls. The infrastructure is falling apart, meaning that you’ll often have to explore by boat. Nightmarish horrors lurk around every corner (the blonde woman with the tentacle face is going to haunt me), just waiting to tear you limb from limb, and you’re not kitted out enough to handle it.

Unlike most FPS games or third-person shooters where ammunition is abundant, The Sinking City 2 is more like Stalker or Amnesia: The Bunker. Every shot counts, bullets are scarce, and you’ll have to balance out your inventory. You might really want that shotgun, for example, but if it’s only got one round left, you’re probably better off ditching it.

As you wind your way through Arkham’s streets you’ll collect clues and uncover various different puzzles. While they’re often optional, solving these mysteries can lead you into new areas where yet more secrets await. Exploration is key, then, but doesn’t come without risks.

If you’re interested in supporting The Sinking City 2’s development, the Ukraine-based Frogwares has just announced a Kickstarter. “After three years of this horrid war hanging over our daily lives, we’ve learned to adapt, though it has never been easy,” CEO Wael Amr says. “In 2023 when we released Sherlock Holmes The Awakened with the help of Kickstarter and our loving fans, we built ourselves a safety net that saved us more than once.

“From power outages and the need for team members to relocate on short notice, to having to pause development for days, this safety net was crucial. Given that The Sinking City 2 is a far more complex and demanding game, we’ve decided to take the same route as before.” You can support The Sinking City 2 here, or, alternatively, wishlist it on Steam.

In the meantime, however, we have a list of all the best war games if it’s the 1920s setting that caught your eye. Alternatively, here’s a rundown of all of the upcoming PC games for 2025 and beyond – it’s shaping up to be a pretty good year for horror fans.
