Ammunition explosions at a military unit in Russia’s Vladimir region that started on Tuesday as result of a fire have been “gradually ending,” Alexander Avdeev, governor of the region, said on social media on Wednesday.
Schools and several businesses, as well as roads in Vladimir’s Kirzhach district, where the detonations have been taking place, will remain closed on Wednesday, Avdeev said. The
“Surveys and an assessment of the consequences are required,” he added.
Four people were injured in the explosions of shells at the base, which also forced late on Tuesday the evacuation of about 450 people living nearby. The Kirzhach district in Vladimir is about 90 km (56 miles) east of the Kremlin.
The Russian defence ministry said on Tuesday that the fire had been caused by a breach of safety requirements and had resulted in the detonation of ammunition stored in a warehouse.
