Ponting felt that the Indian camp may not be entirely truthful about Bumrah’s injury as the ace pacer didn’t even bowl during the warm-up on Day 3 in Sydney.
Jasprit Bumrah not taking the field on the third day of the Sydney Test raised quite a few eyebrows. The ace India pacer, who shouldered India throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, left the field on the second day’s proceedings and was taken to the hospital by an ambulance. The Indian camp claimed that the fast bowler was suffering from ‘back spasms’ and thus, was taken for scans.
“He had a back spasm,” said Prasidh Krishna at the post-match press conference on Saturday. “He has gone for scans so the medical team is monitoring. We’ll know (whether he will keep playing) when the medical team gets back to us.”
However, a few former Australian cricketers and journalists think otherwise. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting opined that the claim was a smokescreen. Meanwhile, senior journalist Peter Lalor revealed that a scan machine was available to the Indian team at the SCG, so Bumrah might have gone to the hospital to take a pain-killer injection.
“My mail is he didn’t go for a scan,” Lalor told Channel 7.
“They have scanning machines in the dressing rooms. He went for an injection. Probably Cortisone,” he added.
Ponting felt that the visitors may not be entirely truthful about Bumrah’s injury as the ace pacer didn’t even bowl during the warm-up on Day 3 in Sydney.
“It seemed like a real worry for me,” Ponting said on Channel 7.
“They said back spasms when he got back (to the SCG). [But] he’s running up the stairs. He ran off the field. Those are not signs or symptoms of back spasms. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope it is. I would love to see him take further part in this game and not be out for an extended period of time again like he was with the stress fractures a couple of years ago.”
Bumrah underwent surgery in 2023 for a stress fracture in his back and missed out on some key assignments, including the Asia Cup 2022, the subsequent T20 World Cup 2022, and the World Test Championship Final against Australia.
